The Highlands Emergency Services Alliance Meets Its Challenge!
In
the Spring, The Allegheny Health Foundation announced its newest community
challenge grant program. The Highlands Emergency Services Alliance
was developed in conjunction with local volunteer fire companies,
Highlands High School, local officials and others to determine what
can be done about the declining number of volunteer firefighters in
the area.
In
the Fall of 2008, Highlands High School offered a pilot program allowing
high school students to take the required firefighter and life safety
classes as for-credit classes. By completing the year to year curriculum
(10th, 11th and 12th grades) students will satisfy the 180 educational
requirement to qualify as a volunteer firefighter. There was
a record number of students who registered and are currently enrolled
in the Fire Safety Curriculum.
HESA
hosted the Community
Awareness and Safety Fair on Saturday, September 13,
2008 at the Heights Shopping Center. The goal of at least 500
people was met at the Fair and HESA qualified for the $25,000 grant
from the Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation. The grant will be
used to award annual scholarships to deserving graduates of the Highlands
High School HESA program.
