Healthy Teen Initiative

The Healthy Teen Initiative was designed to provide information and education to teens, parents, teachers, stakeholders and community members interested in keeping our teens and young adults healthy.

Truth and Consequences Jail Tour Program

The Truth and Consequences Jail Tour Program was developed in conjunction with area District Judges, Social Services Organizations and Local Law Enforcement Agencies.  The goal of the program is to take area at risk teens to the County Prisons so they can experience the reality of  prison life.  While on the tour, the teens will go through the booking process, are placed in a jail cell and have a 30 minute lecture by current inmates about their life experiences.  The Truth and Consequences Jail Tour Program is funded by the AKHF Healthy Teen Initiative and is offered free of charge to the public.  For additional information or to inquire about the next jail tour, please call (724) 226-9996.

Helping Teens to Make Healthy Choices

Today's teens face a variety of important lifestyle choices. The AKH Foundation, through the Healthy Teen Initiative, hopes to help teens make healthy lifestyle choices, and to develop resiliencies towards the temptations of unhealthy choices, many of which can result in tragic consequences. The Healthy Teen Initiative will continue in the future with single issue workshops addressing issues concerning:

  • Substance abuse prevention
  • Alcohol and tobacco dangers
  • Safe driving
  • Maintaining a healthy body image
  • Sexually transmitted disease awareness
  • Suicide and depression prevention
  • Internet safety and security
  • And much more

In the past several years, approximately 2,700 teachers earned more than 6,300 Act 48 hours at the AKH Foundation's community education programs.  Teachers from the school districts of Allegheny-Valley, Apollo-Ridge, Armstrong, Burrell, Deer Lakes, Fox Chapel, Freeport, Highlands, KiskiNew Kensington/Arnold, Plum, Riverview, Transfiguration School and others, received Act 48 hours.
