Public Safety Programs

Over the years, the AKH Foundation has displayed a strong commitment to public safety programs. Recognizing the important role that state-of-the-art equipment plays in the first responder's mission of saving lives and property, the AKH Foundation continues to make grants for rescue equipment.

Public Safety Projects

As the use of AED's, thermal imaging cameras, public safety training and other safety equipment increases, the community's sense of safety and security also increases. The following is a sampling of projects in the Alle-Kiski area that were provided by and supported through the AKH Foundation's Public Safety Program.

  • The Harrison Hills Volunteer Fire Department received a grant to purchase an Airbag Locator Laptop and Software.  The airbag locator will assist first responders, when rescuing vehicle accident victims, by finding undeployed airbags before they cause additional damage.
  • A grant was awarded to the Brackenridge Boro Police Department to be used for the purchase of an Enclosed Space Video Camera
  • The Allegheny-Kiski Health Foundation continues its support of the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Program with its most recent grants to the Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Department and Penn State University - New Kensington Campus.
  • The AKH Foundation furnished the Pittsburgh Mills Mall with the Paramedic Equipment that was needed to outfit the onsite Medic Room.  The room will be staffed, during mall operational hours, by a licensed paramedic ready to handle a wide variety of situations.
  • The Brackenridge Boro Police Department received a grant to purchase Two Mobile Police Radios.
  • The AKHF recently awarded its third Emergency Vehicle to AK PULSER, Inc.   AK PULSER is a first responder that is furnished with advanced life support equipment capable of handling all types of health and emergency situations.
  • The Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Program , initiated by the AKH Foundation in 2000, in cooperation with the Allegheny Valley Chamber of Commerce's Community Safety Task Force, continues to grow. AED's are small, lightweight, devices that look at a person's heart rhythm and recognize sudden cardiac arrest. First responders, and lay person's, rely on AED's to guide them through simple steps to defibrillate, or shock, the heart. In 2002, the entire custodial staff of Burrell School District received CPR and AED training through a grant from the AKH Foundation. A total of eight AED units, valued at more than $22,000, training, or software has been provided to Vandergrift Fire Department and Citizens Hose Ambulance, Kittanning, Kiski Valley and Allegheny Valley YMCA's, Highlands Area High School, Springdale, Fawn Township, and Brackenridge Boro Police Department's, AK PULSER at Alle-Kiski Medical Center/Allegheny Valley Hospital and the American Heart Association.

  • The AKH Foundation awarded its second Thermal Imaging Camera to a local volunteer fire department. Due to a matching gift from the Vandergrift council, Vandergrift Volunteer Fire Department #2 received a thermal imaging camera in July. The infrared technology enables fireman to detect people and locate fire sources in smoke-filled buildings. In the fall, the thermal imaging camera was credited with saving a Vandergrift structure from being completely destroyed by fire.

The first thermal imaging camera was given to the Citizens Volunteer Hose Company in Harrison Township was credited with saving the life of a Harrison Township resident.

  • The Foundation co-hosted a very successful "Identifying Clandestine Methamphetamine Laboratories and Dangers to the Community Training", along with the United States Attorney's Office, the PA Police Chief's Association and others for more than 125 law enforcement officials including representatives from the PA State Police, DEA, Secret Service, Federal Marshals, various county police agencies, various local police departments, the National Drug Intelligence and others.

  • The Avonmore Life Savers received a grant to purchase four Motorola Pagers in 2003.

  • In 2000, Kiski Valley Special Services received funding from the Foundation for the purchase of a 74 Ton Air Lifting Bag to aid in rescue efforts.

  • The Brackenridge Police Department received funds to purchase much needed Body Armor for the department.
